I have a document which comprises 212 pages, around 950Kb in size. When editing it in Wordperfect X4, I get an error dialog pop up saying 'Unknown file format'.
If I try to save the document, I get the same error several times, then it doesn't save. The same happens if I try to print the entire document. If I try to load it in MS Word 2007, about 112 pages are imported and then Word says the file may be corrupt.I have checked the document with WPLOOK and that says there is no corruption in it.Does anyone have any idea what I can do to correct whatever errors there are in the document, or who/where I can contact to try and get it sorted out? Many thanks.I have checked the document with WPLOOK and that says there is no corruption in it.' Checking' is not the same as 'repairing.' See the exact instructions on using WPLOOK on the above linked page.P.S.Help us to help you:.
Please update your profile in our (see the first tab link at the top of this page) with your operating system and your specific 'build' number of WordPerfect as shown in your WordPerfect's Help, About WordPerfect menu. See the column on the left of this page for examples of the four-part decimal number we need. It will be in the form of n.0.0.n, where ' n' = a number.
It is also found in a small text file, volinfo.txt, in the root driectory of the installation CD. Enter this four-part number under 'Additional Information - WordPerfect Office version.' It will then appear alongside your name and we won't have to ask you for it in the future. This information makes offering help and troubleshooting much more effective and is sometimes indispensable since some suggestions or solutions work only in specific versions or builds of the program. Very important. Then, a simple repair method is to copy the entire file into a new document, which creates a new header for the file and sometimes clears up mild corruption in a document.
Just select the entire document (Ctrl+a), copy the entire document (Ctrl+c), switch over to a new, blank document, paste (Ctrl+v), and rename the new document.RobinP.S. TR, I was posting at the time of your last post, so I see that copying the document to a new document didn't help. I do hope that you have a backup copy of your document, though. I would also go through all of the methods in Barry's link, one by one. Hopefully one will work for you. Thanks for the reply, Robin.I did manage to sort out the file in the end by opening it with OpenOffice 3.1, which had no problem converting it.
Then I saved it as an OpenOffice file (.odt format) to preserve the document layout and formatting. I then opened that file with Wordperfect and it now no longer has the problem with the error dialog popping up.Maybe that course of action will help someone else who finds that other ways to repair the file either don't work or lose too much of the formatting info.
Received similar error while trying to edit and save a document (unknown file error). Saving the entire document to a new one didn't work, so I copied chunks of it piecemeal and saved to the new document, until I got the error when I tried to save.
So I looked in Reveal Codes on that particular block of text.At the very end, just before the signature line, I found a box code, and the contents said WPTemp0000, and a following code that said Ignore Box.Tricky, but able to eliminate the code and paste the remaining text to a new document.I'm using X3. Maybe this will help others if other fixes don't work.
