I liked The Four Agreements and found it useful, so I thought I'd try this one. It's billed as 'guided meditations,' and they definitely are not. They're all prayers. Not meditations in the sense that one would normally use that word. I'm not religious (at all!), but I do have a spiritual side, and I was able to reword them in ways that made them useful to me till I got to the last two chapters, which were basically about being wedded to God (or love, but God kept making an appearance), I liked The Four Agreements and found it useful, so I thought I'd try this one. It just got weird. There's good stuff to be gleaned from this (although nothing much that The Four Agreements didn't cover), but, for me, it took a lot of effort to look past the overtly religious aspect of the 'inspiration.' I STRONGLY disliked this book.

The only reason I read it was because it was a freebie at the YMCA.and now I know why! The book is (I believe) specifically written for people who are utterly pissed at life. Through the veil of spirituality it basically preaches ideas like, 'The Golden Rule,' loving yourself, and caring for your surroundings.all ideas you should practice daily if you are a decent human, which, lets face it, if you actively seek to better yourself through self help No. I STRONGLY disliked this book. Through the veil of spirituality it basically preaches ideas like, 'The Golden Rule,' loving yourself, and caring for your surroundings.all ideas you should practice daily if you are a decent human, which, lets face it, if you actively seek to better yourself through self help books, you are! Even more frustrating is it does not recommend how, rather just tells you to practice these ideas (i.e. Unconditionally forgive people you have not forgiven) suggesting this can be achieved through meditation (which, not to mention, generally takes years of practice to master). Let me save you the (albeit short) read with one sentence that sums it all up.don't be a dick. One simple thing about the books by Ruiz is the fact that he applies a strong sense of spirituality, with no religion. This is above all else a Book of Prayers, way to communicate with God in the deepest sense.

This book is often referred to as a companion book rightly so because if you haven't read The Four Agreements, many of the principals in this book won't make any sense to you. I found this book okay, I believe once you get a hold of what The Four Agreements are you choose to live by their principal or not. It's standing your exposure to Ruez without believing in the agreements is the most sincere waste of your time. Ruiz continues to help the reader understand their spiritual life versus their way in the world by referring to the world as their story, and their spiritual life as their dream. I consider any book in the series truly beneficial for someone who has no place to spiritually start from.

I don't believe if I hadn't the background that I do this book would not be enough to hold me together spiritually. These are okay principles but there is very little in here to help you understand what to do when you're hurting, you feel like you're not living your purpose and some of the bigger issues addressed by beliefs like Christianity, Buddhism and so on. If you are starting from the spiritual Ground Zero begin with the book by Ruiz onThe Four Agreements but I strongly recommend accelerating your life to a deeper area of study in a major faith. Combining new insights with old wisdom, don Miguel has dedicated his life to sharing the ancient Toltec wisdom by translating it into practical concepts that promote transformation through truth and common sense.Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers, and raised in rural Mexico by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather. The family anticipated that Miguel would embrace their centuries-old legacy of healing and teaching, and carry forward the esoteric Toltec knowledge. Instead, distracted by modern life, Miguel chose to attend medical school and become a surgeon. A near-death experience changed his life. Stunned by this experience, he began an intensive practice of self-inquiry. He devoted himself to the mastery of the ancient ancestral wisdom, studying earnestly with his mother, and completing an apprenticeship with a powerful shaman in the Mexican desert.
