Performing Arts ProgramMaryhaven Center of Hope’s Performing Arts Day Habilitation is a facility that serves approximately 50 individuals with development disabilities by teaching them life skills through the performing arts. Areas of study include Acting, Set & Costume Design, Music and Dance.
Our program is unique in that it truly defines what it means to make dreams come true.Performing Arts serves as a venue to allow our individuals greater independence in making decisions about the direction they wish their life to go in. It works in conjunction with Maryhaven staff, families and members of the community to ensure a positive work environment that is both fun and enriching.Each year Performing Arts presents approximately three major in house productions to families, the community and other OPWDD agencies. Past productions include: “West Side Story”, “Grease”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Mary Poppins”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland”. Along with these great performances we have also written original works based on the characters from “The Addams Family” and “Little Shop of Horrors” as well as a completely original production, “Sensorielle” which took audiences on a journey through the senses.Having recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, Performing Arts takes pride in giving its participants a voice and avenues to express it. Through Social Work groups, advocacy meetings, auditions and the positive rapport with staff our participants truly become more independent with regards to their wants and needs.
Along with classroom instructors Performing Arts has a full clinical team consisting of Management, Nursing, Applied Behavior Specialist and Social Worker, dedicated to smoothly integrating the participants wants and needs with their services and life goals. This program sees the ability where others see only disability. Culinary Arts ProgramThe Culinary Arts Day Habilitation program opened its doors on November 19, 2007. The program was devised to promote culinary skills via lessons in a state of the art kitchen, led by a wonderful Chef. Culinary lessons include food preparation, knowledge of cuisine, shopping, planning, menu coordination, cleanliness, kitchen safety, appropriate hygiene, and nutrition; as well as the importance of exercise.
The culinary skills are also reinforced within the classrooms, which each have a cuisine theme (Greek Isle, Mexican hacienda, Tuscany Villa, and Pan-Asian).The Culinary Arts Day Habilitation program also offers the folks an opportunity to enhance their community integration via various volunteer sites (senior shopping, horse farm, recycling, etc.); as well as educational and recreational trips to numerous locations on Long Island. In addition, the folks who attend the Culinary Arts Day Habilitation program have access to a variety of services catered to their specific needs (Speech, Physical Therapy, Psychological, and Social Work services); as well as educational and entertaining lessons within the classroom. Health and Wellness Day Habilitation ProgramThe goal of Patchogue “Health and Wellness” Day Habilitation is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment that promotes a lifetime of learning, personal growth, and self esteem. Each classroom; Nature, Sun, and Sky, exemplifies a calm and encouraging setting for our individuals to reach their full potential both academically and socially. Staff at Patchogue Day Hab dedicate their time and resources to providing active treatment to each individual by fostering their growth in areas of daily life skills, health and nutrition, meditation and spirituality, communication and expression, community integration, and peer socialization.
The opinions of our individuals are an integral part of our program’s success and the most fundamental component of the “Health and Wellness” program is that they are as much a part of making it unique as is the staff. Higher Learning Day Habilitation ProgramThe Higher Learning Day Habilitation Program truly specializes in allowing those who attend an opportunity to grow to new heights: socially, intellectually and possibly vocationally if they so choose. Those who are not the perfect match for existing Day Habs often opt for this new concept in growth that the Higher Learning Program offers. Whether you have just graduated high school, A Boces program, need to enhance your social skills, or simply yearn for a collegiate type level of learning and independence this program is possible to suit those needs.As a day program Higher Learning is incredibly unique. The three classrooms focus mainly on academics in order to improve or reinforce these skills.
In addition to academics, the classrooms each have specific focuses, culinary skills, computer skills and the arts. The classroom staff caters lessons to appeal to the interests of the individuals while meeting their valued outcomes. Individuals also enjoy participation in community integration activities to a variety of destinations including educational trips, cultural events, shopping trips, restaurants, museums, and college campuses; staff members and individuals work together in determining specific trip destinations. Social needs are also addressed through individual and group counseling as well as individualized behavior support plans that focus on enhancing pro-social behavior through a system of positive reinforcement. Holbrook Day Habilitation ProgramMaryhaven’s Holbrook Day Habilitation Program is a Medicaid Waiver Program for adults with developmental disabilities.
It specifically maintains a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorders by providing increased structure and support. A structured schedule is implemented for classroom lessons and activities, centering on building communication skills, independent living skills, and improving socialization experiences. All of these lessons utilize visual supports to encourage participation and assist in comprehension and retention of the skills being taught.PECS (the Picture Exchange Communication System) is utilized to assist non-verbal individuals in their communication skills.
PECS is also used in conjunction with individualized activity schedule boards displayed in the classrooms to provide visual cues which assist the individuals in following their daily schedule. They are featured around the DH to let the individuals know where items and rooms they may need to use are located.A Snoezlen Room is available for all to use. This room is a sensory therapy room which provides a multi-sensory environment consisting of textured, tactile objects, aromatherapy, soft music, colored lighting, and vibrating mats. This multi-sensory environment is used proactively, offering a stress-free environment for stimulation and relaxation. Each of the four classrooms has adjustable lighting and equipment available such as sound blocking headphones and tactile, textured objects to manipulate, affording an individualized amount of sensory input.Various socialization groups are provided throughout the year, including but not limited to sports groups, social skills groups, gardening groups, volunteer groups, and a Karaoke Club. Community Integration outings are implemented daily in small groups. This allows the individuals an opportunity to apply the socialization skills and independent living skills they learn while in class to real-life experiences.
We have special events to commemorate holidays through out the year. A “Sensorypalooza” event every fall allows everyone the chance to enjoy special activities themed around the 5 senses such as tye-dying, taste tests, experimenting with lotions, parachute games, and musical activities.In summary, the Holbrook Day Habilitation program is a fun, educational, nurturing environment that promotes independence and education through positive learning experiences by a caring and companionate team of professionals who truly enjoy making a difference in the lives of others. The program has an array of onsite licensed clinical services ranging from Nursing, Physical Therapy, Psychology and Speech-Language. The program activities are aimed to promote independence in the following adaptive areas: basic safety skills, personal care and health skills, money management skills, housekeeping skills, socialization with others, and development of communication skills.The Day Habilitation program is committed to creating an environment that is educational and therapeutic to the individuals’ special needs. The individuals’ safety and sense of well being is foremost.
The classrooms have enriched staffing ratios to ensure for quality and dynamic programming. The staff members are trained on specific dietary precautions and proper use of transfer equipment.
Structured activities are planned to stimulate individual growth and maintenance of acquired skill sets.Community Integration is an integral component of the Day Habilitation’s schedule. Individuals are offered daily opportunities for memorable community outings and interactive special events. At Day Habilitation 101, the experiences are fulfilling and person- centered to maximize the individuals abilities and achievements! Terryville Day Habilitation ProgramThe Terryville Day Habilitation Program opened in September of 1994. The program offers services to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, providing them with opportunities to develop their independent living skills and to be active in their communities.We focus on the following areas of skill development, Life SkillsPersonal Care Skills, Health Care Training, Safety Skills, Social Skills and Communication Skills. We also provide various Community Integration opportunities for our individuals such as shopping, trips to the movies and plays, and athletic events.Additionally, the Terryville Day Hab offers our program participants a variety of clinical support services such as Nursing, Behavior Support, Social Work, Speech and Physical Therapy.
